Think Marvel’s Universe Was Big Enough? Well Think Again

Looks like Marvel isn’t wasting any time now that The Avengers spin-off show, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has been picked up for a full season. They are developing a spin-off show based on Captain America: The First Avenger that would focus on Agent Carter (played by Hayley Atwell in the film), but that’s not all. There is also talk that Marvel has begun shopping around four new undisclosed dramatic series as well as one mini-series, and that they’re aiming at cable distributors and Video On Demand services.

For Marvel fans this has got to be pretty exciting. Personally I’m feeling a bit fatigued from superhero movies, and this potentially sounds like overkill. However, I like the idea of Marvel creating an immersive universe that spans both TV and film.  In no time at all we could be watching one Marvel show at home, then going to the local cineplex minutes later to see the newest Marvel movie, and then hurrying back home to see how the events in the movie affected the characters in yet another Marvel show. Nothing like that has ever been done before. It’s bonkers.

That’s why I’m going to reserve judgment until I learn more. And if I’m being honest, even if the premises of the new shows don’t sound good, there’s a very healthy chance I’d still watch at least a few episodes. I’m currently halfway through the second episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and so far I think it’s passable. It fills in that void that Smallville left in me when it ended, combining action and hokiness in a way I wouldn’t normally enjoy, all of which is to say it’s not great, but I’ll probably keep watching.
